Week 3: Distractions & Real-World Skills
This week is abouttaking everything you’ve built and testing it in slightly more distracting environments. Keep expectations realistic—this is where learning gets strengthened.

Skill 1: Ask Permission
Ask Permission VideoWe now teach your dog to stay connected to you even when interesting things are happening nearby.
- Start by tossing an object like a toy or food making sure its far enough away that the dog cant get it on lead.
- Wait for your dog to notice (but not fully fixate).
- The moment they choose to look back at you → mark (“Yes!”)
- Reward immediately.
- Repeat, allowing your dog to observe but encouraging re-engagement.
Important: We are not forcing focus—we are rewarding the choice to check in.

Skill 2: Loose Lead Walking with Distractions
We now apply loose lead walking in environments with more movement, smells, and stimulation.
- Begin walking as per Week 2.
- Add direction changes and pauses.
- Reward when your dog stays close despite distractions.
- If your dog pulls → stop and reset immediately.
- Increase difficulty gradually (don’t jump too fast).
Handler Tip:
Be more rewarding than the environment—use higher value treats if needed.
Goal: Your dog maintains a loose leash even when things are happening around them.

Skill 3: Sit Stay + Release (Clarity & Control)
Begin walking as per Week 2.
Add direction changes and pauses.
Reward when your dog stays close despite distractions.
If your dog pulls → stop and reset immediately.
Increase difficulty gradually (don’t jump too fast).
Handler Tip:
Be more rewarding than the environment—use higher value treats if needed.
Goal:
Your dog maintains a loose leash even when things are happening around them. -
Skill 4: Recall with Distractions
We now strengthen recall by adding mild distractions and improving response speed.
- Allow your dog to be slightly distracted. you can assist by tossing something or engaging a friend or family member
- Say name + “Come” in a happy tone.
- Move backwards to encourage movement toward you.
- Mark (“Yes!”) the moment they commit to coming.
- Reward generously when they reach you.
Important:
Only call once - Make it exciting and rewarding
-If they ignore → reduce distractions and try again

Skill 5: Leave It – Progression
We build on Week 2 by increasing difficulty and introducing real-world scenarios. Steps:
- Place a treat on the ground (covered with your hand if needed).
- When your dog moves away or looks at you → mark (“Yes!”)
- Reward with a different treat from your hand.
- Gradually uncover the treat.
- Progress to dropping items or walking past them.
Rules:
-Dog does NOT get the item they leave
-Reward always comes from y

Skill 6:Mat Training – Adding Distance & Relax
Send to mat video- end your dog to the mat do this from a short lead distance first by tossing the treat and saying "Mat"
- Reward When your dog reaches the mat.
- Avoid the temptation of walking them over to the mat - by now they should follow the treat.
- wait a few seconds after that eat the treat and if they are still there throw another piece. if they choose to sit or lay reward heavily.
- If they break → calmly reset and make it easier. Progression:
Increase duration
Increase distraction level gradually
Goal: Your dog can relax upon reaching the mat & can be sent to location froma short distance.
End of Week 3 Goal
By the end of this week, your dog should:
- Stay engaged around mild distractions
- Walk more reliably on a loose leash in busier areas
- Hold a sit until released
- Respond to recall with some distractions
- Leave tempting items more consistently
- Stay calmer and longer on the mat in active environments
- Go to mat from a short distance
